A car manufacturer in Asia has changed the traditional materials that control the engine inlet and exhaust oil control valves, instead of aluminum using carbon fiber reinforced composites.
This valve, made of high-performance thermoplastic materials (depending on the size of the engine, approximately 2-8 valves per vehicle), greatly reduces the cost and weight of the vehicle's manufacturing and improves the engine's responsiveness.

2018 September 5-7th, Miami will host the American Association of Plastics Engineers Automotive Composites Conference (SPE Acce), will show people a new type of resin called "Sumiploy CS5530", the material is produced by Sumitomo Chemical Company of Tokyo, Japan, And the company is responsible for sales in the North American market.

Sumiploy resins have a unique formula, which is made from the addition of chopped carbon fibers and additives in the PES resin produced by Sumitomo Corporation, which greatly improves the abrasion resistance and dimensional stability of the material. It is said that the composite has excellent heat resistance, good dimensional stability and long-term creep resistance over a wide temperature range, good impact strength, and a range of excellent properties such as chemical resistance to aromatic compounds such as gasoline, ethanol and engine oil, inherent flame retardancy and high environmental stress cracking resistance (ESCR).

Unlike many other high-temperature thermoplastic materials, the Sumiploy CS5530 is highly liquid, making it easier to shape high-precision 3D geometries. In the practical application of the control valve, the Sumiploy CS5530 composites must meet the engineering requirements for ultra-high dimensional accuracy (10.7 mm±50 mm or 0.5%), 40 ℃ to 150 ℃ thermal stability, low friction coefficient, chemical resistance to oil, excellent fatigue strength and creep resistance. The conversion of aluminum into thermoplastic composites not only reduces the cost of production, but also greatly improves the performance and lightweighting standards of automotive engines. Since its launch in 2015, the component has been commercially used as a thermoplastic material and can be recycled through melting and reprocessing.

In addition to automotive applications, Sumiploy resins are also suitable for electrical/electronic and aerospace components to replace machined steel or aluminum, as well as other high-performance thermoplastic materials such as PEEK, polyether ketone (PAEK), and Polyether imide (PEI). While these applications are not the focus of our attention, sumiploy resins reduce friction with matching surfaces in a minimal wetting environment, while the integration of high-precision injection molded parts also enhances the functionality of the material and lowers production costs. Sumiploy resins are ideal for replacing metals in oil control valve pistons, solenoid valve pistons, HVAC blades and pistons, as well as industrial gears, lubrication-free bushings and bearings.
